In case you missed it (ICYMI) last week, Lehigh University won a grant from the Department of Commerce for their entrepreneurship program.
This program, called the Lehigh Urban Entrepreneurship Collaborative, will work to accelerate commercialization in the area. The grant will total $275,000 and focus on small business in the Lehigh Valley. “The main focus of (the program) is to support start-up companies in the region, especially in urban areas of the Lehigh Valley,” said Todd A. Watkins, executive director, Baker Institute for Entrepreneurship, Creativity and Innovation at Lehigh University. Watkins is also a wicked viola player; when he’s not working with the Baker Institute, you can find him in Baker Hall practicing Tshaikovsky (see him perform with the Lehigh Philharmonic on November 2 & 3).
Back to entrepreneurship, the Collaborative is “part of a broader package to develop the entrepreneurial and creative structure at Lehigh and, more broadly, in the region,” he said. This grant created by partners amidst the entire Valley, including the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation (LVEDC), Ben Franklin Technology Partners, Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ), Northampton Community College and the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges (LVAIC).
And the grant wasn’t the only big news for entrepreneurship at Lehigh this fall; the university also ranked on the Princeton Review’s list of 25 Top Undergraduate Entrepreneurship programs.
As if all of that wasn’t cool enough, Governor Corbett was at the Ben Franklin Partner’s TechVentures yesterday located on Lehigh’s Mountaintop Campus. The center is integrated with the university as of last year, and allows students to begin business ventures at any point in their undergraduate career. “One of my highest priorities as governor is to ensure there is a job available for every Pennsylvanian who wants one. With this center, its clients and its graduates setting the pace, I’m sure we can get there,” Corbett said.
Lehigh’s having a great week! (and their football team is still undefeated!)
